Details: The labyrinth of Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral, located in the Centre-Val-de-Loire region of France, is meant to evoke Greek mythology. The architect Daedalus constructed it to represent the destruction of a monster--the Minotaur--who ate the children of Athens. Unlike the ornate mosaic labyrinths which are found throughout much of northern and central Italy, however, there are no images or allusions to the battle between Theseus and the Minotaur from Greek mythology. The eleven-circuit labyrinth has an asymmetrical, mathematically and visually complex pattern in which every quadrant is different. The path twists and turns so that you move towards the center and out again as if alternately toward and then away from God.

I sought to extend the idea geographically, and so this labyrinth, while thematically similar, is about three times as large, with thirty-two courses, rather than eleven. The labyrinth at Chartres is forty-two feet in diameter. By contrast, this version would be so large that it would render the mediative purpose somewhat impractical. Many hours would be required to walk a labyrinth of this size.
